FAQs

  1. Why should I use Enamelon®?
Enamelon uses the clinically proven active ingredient stannous fluoride to help prevent caries, gingivitis and to treat sensitivity. In addition, the patent-pending formula of Enamelon utilizes the remineralizing technology of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to deliver greater fluoride uptake uniquely into the enamel and to protect against demineralization.
  2. Why is Enamelon’s active ingredient stannous fluoride?
Stannous fluoride provides additional benefits compared to sodium fluoride. In addition to the cavity-fighting protection, stannous fluoride also helps to prevent sensitive teeth and gingivitis. Stannous fluoride is an antimicrobial agent, it is bactericidal and inhibits the harmful effects that create plaque and cause gingivitis. Enamelon is the first formula to combine the greater protective properties of the stannous ion with the remineralizing potential of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) technology.
  3. How much fluoride is in Enamelon?
Enamelon toothpaste contains 0.45% stannous fluoride (1150 ppm F ion) and Enamelon Preventive Treatment Gel contains 0.40% stannous fluoride (970 ppm F ion). All toothpastes containing fluoride are regulated by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA established conditions that generally are recognized as safe and effective for anticaries drug products for over-the-counter use. The FDA lists stannous fluoride toothpaste to fall within 0.351% – 0.474% (850-1150 ppm F ion).
  4. Why does the label state “stannous fluoride may produce surface staining of the teeth”?
Stannous fluoride has the ability to form slight surface stains. FDA industry guidance regulations for toothpastes containing stannous fluoride require a statement on the label to notify consumers about a potential for staining and the removal of non-permanent staining.
Enamelon uses stabilized stannous fluoride in a proprietary combination of ingredients that provide for a better taste and presents a better condition to prohibit staining.
  5. Will Enamelon stain my teeth?
No, however, Enamelon toothpaste contains minimal abrasives to safely polish teeth while minimizing enamel wear. This specialty toothpaste addresses sensitivity relief, prevents gingivitis and cavities. Consumers who experience tooth staining due to diet or behavior may occasionally require more frequent professional cleanings, tooth whitening or may use a more abrasive toothpaste before using Enamelon Preventive Treatment Gel.
  6. How are stains formed?
Diets heavy in dark colors and lifestyle choices may contribute to tooth staining. Contact with foods such as dark colored berries and drinks, such as coffee, colas or teas, tobacco use and smoking will gradually darken teeth. The general rule is that any food or beverage that can stain a tablecloth has the potential to stain teeth. Your dental professional can determine your cleaning routine based on examination of your teeth (such as enamel erosion, gum line recession, and cavities) and understanding your hygiene habits.
  7. What does “ACP therapy” mean?
Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP) provides an environment for tooth remineralization. Enamelon contains calcium and phosphate ions which are naturally found in your saliva. Your saliva naturally provides the ability to remineralize your teeth; however, lifestyle factors can affect your salivary capabilities.
Enamelon products provide the additional calcium and phosphate ions to help replenish the shortage.
Introducing calcium and phosphate back into the surface of the tooth with products containing ACP technology is an ideal strategy to fight the demineralization process. The ACP-forming ingredients also strengthen teeth by acting as an enhanced fluoride delivery system to deliver more fluoride to the tooth surface than products without ACP.
  8. What is Ultramulsion®?
A patented and proprietary combination of ingredients that creates a long-lasting, premium demulcent (material that reduces irritation of the mucous membranes in the mouth by forming a protective film) which safely coats, lubricates, and soothes dry oral soft tissue. Ultramulsion® helps to keep the mint flavor in the mouth longer and, therefore, there’s less of a chance that the “tin flavor” associated with stannous fluoride will be experienced. The addition of the Ultramulsion may prohibit the attachment of plaque (biofilm).
  9. Does Enamelon contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)?
No. Enamelon products do not contain any sodium lauryl sulfate which is commonly found in 5000 ppm F toothpastes and 1100 - 1150 ppm F over-the-counter toothpastes. SLS is used as surfactant/ detergent in some oral-care products and creates the foaming action in the product. Some studies suggest that SLS can increase the frequency of canker sores or apthous ulcers. People prone to canker sores, mouth ulcers may be instructed to avoid use of products that contain SLS.
  10. What is the Enamelon flavor offering?
Enamelon toothpaste is available in Mint Breeze and the Enamelon Preventive Treatment Gel is Clean Mint. The soft mint flavors were designed for patient acceptance. The flavor offers a notable refreshing feeling for patients with extreme sensitivity, yet mild and enjoyable for children to brush but not swallow.
  11. What is the “tingling” effect I get after brushing my teeth?
The mint flavors are enhanced with Spilanthes extract – a natural herb, which encourages salivary flow and heightens flavor. This distinctive ingredient allows for the natural remineralizing properties of the patients’ saliva to perpetuate balance. Spilanthes offers a stimulating tingling pleasure sensation while arousing the saliva for a refreshing and revitalizing clean finish. It has antimicrobial/anti-inflammatory and saliva-stimulating characteristics. Spilanthes Extract is a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) certified flavorant (Alcohol and gluten free).
  12. Can I use Enamelon longer than 2 weeks? 4 weeks?
Yes, Enamelon can be used longer than two weeks or even four weeks for caries protection, antigingivitis and for anti-sensitivity. However if gingivitis, bleeding or redness of the gums continues for more than two weeks after using this product you may need to see your dentist as this may indicate a more serious problem that needs prompt attention. Also sensitive teeth persisting longer than four weeks may suggest a more serious problem that needs prompt attention from your dentist.
  13. If I don’t have sensitivity issues or gingivitis, can I still use Enamelon?
Yes, even if you or a family member does not have sensitivity or gingivitis, they still can use Enamelon. The clinically proven active ingredient protects against cavities, gingivitis and sensitivity issues. Enamelon also provides a beneficial saliva-soluble coating that moisturizes and soothes soft tissues of the mouth and includes spilanthes, a natural herb that can boost saliva flow and flavor.
  14. Is Enamelon safe for use by children as well as adults?
Yes. Dosage is based on age. The American Dental Association (ADA) recently published a new age recommendation on fluoride toothpaste use for young children. The ADA recommends a “smear” (size of a grain of rice) of toothpaste from eruption of first tooth up to age 3. A “pea-sized” amount of toothpaste for children ages 3 to 6.
  15. My dentist has given me the Enamelon Preventive Treatment Gel and Enamelon toothpaste. When do I use each?
Both Enamelon products are for caries prevention, antigingivitis and sensitive teeth. Your dentist may suggest a brushing routine that best fits your oral health program. Enamelon toothpaste can be used just like your regular fluoride toothpaste. Brush at least twice a day or as directed by your dentist. Enamelon Preventive Treatment Gel should be used once a day after brushing your teeth with toothpaste. Apply the gel to your toothbrush and brush teeth thoroughly. Allow the gel to remain on your teeth for 1 minute and then spit out. Do not swallow the gel. Do not rinse, eat or drink for 30 minutes after brushing.
  16. Does Enamelon contain gluten and dyes?
No. Enamelon does not contain any gluten. There are no colorants or dyes in the ingredients.
  17. Does Enamelon contain cleaning abrasives?
Enamelon toothpaste does contain a low abrasive. Enamelon has low abrasivity to safety polish teeth while minimizing enamel wear – this is especially helpful if you have sensitivity, erosion and thin enamel. Enamelon Preventive Treatment Gel does not contain any abrasives.
  18. Why does Enamelon not have the Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association?
Premier Dental Products Company has not requested the ADA seal at this time. Participation in the ADA Seal program is voluntary. Consumer dental products are evaluated at the request of a distributor or manufacturer.
